Missionary Giving through World Mission
in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas
The World Mission Division acts as a catalyst for the development of mission initiatives in the diocese. The division helps to coordinate diocesan mission trips, assists in fund raising for missions, and maintains a prayer list to support missionaries in the field. The division helps congregations form partnerships in mission initiatives and serves as an educational resource for mission awareness through its representatives in each congregation.
Our Purpose
The World Mission Division seeks to follow Christ's Great Commission to "go and make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19) and to be His witnesses in "Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth" (Acts: 1:8).
The people of West Texas seek to take Christ's love, through mission service, into areas of the world where people are in spiritual and physical need. Our missionaries combine evangelism with efforts that address hunger, health, shelter, and educational needs of those with whom we minister.
Our aim is to form lasting partnerships that enable those with whom we work to experience the power of the Holy Spirit through Christian love and to be better able to lead productive and healthy lives. We seek to bring a message of hope in Christ to those who are hungry for an opportunity to be what God has created them to be.
Our Mission Partnerships
The diocese has formed lasting partnerships with the following Anglican dioceses: Nebbi and Kampala in Uganda, Honduras, Northern Mexico, Cuernavaca and Southeast Mexico. We are also partnering with local authorities and Christians where there is no structured Anglican presence in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. (Click on names of countries to learn more about the mission ministry.)
Through our mission initiatives in these dioceses, we seek to partner with the people there to form lasting relationships in order to promote their well-being by initiating programs of healthcare, empowerment through economic development, evangelism and renewal. We seek mutual exchanges of ideas and personnel. Helping our partners to obtain a better life without dependency is an essential part of all our mission initiatives.
Congregations in West Texas are working together to take mission teams to Honduras, Mexico, Uganda, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. More than 600 people from West Texas serve on short-term mission teams annually.
Our Mission Work
In a typical year we send:
-
5 Water Ministry Teams to Honduras – well drilling, evangelism, hygiene education, micro-business development and ESL. We are training our Honduran partners to use the drilling equipment and teach water hygiene to their neighbors.
-
2 Water Ministry Teams to the Texas/Mexican border – well drilling, evangelism, hygiene education, micro-business development and ESL.
On average 38 of 92 congregations send members on mission trips. One hundred percent of congregations participated in the funding of the Women’s Center in Nebbi, Uganda.
The Diocese also supports long-term missionaries in Mexico, Belarus and Uganda. Individual congregations support other long-term missionaries in other parts of the world.
Our Funding
-
The Diocese of West Texas includes a small amount in its budget for World Mission. This budgeted amount covers administrative costs for such things as development, mailings and travel cost for the Deputy and travel expenses for our foreign partners’ travel when coming to minister to the people of West Texas.
Mission funding raising
is primarily from four sources:
- Diocesan budget – Administrative costs
- Money raised by individual congregations
- Generous gifts from individual donors
- Money raising projects
