Statistics from Generous Giving

What Is Generous Giving?

www.generousgiving.org

While traditionally regarded as the most “generous” people on earth, statistics show that U.S. Christians give proportionately less today than they did during the worst year of the Great Depression. Yet right now, like no other time in history, God has positioned His people with unprecedented wealth and unparalleled opportunity to glorify the risen Christ through generous giving.

Generous Giving is a nonprofit educational ministry that seeks to encourage givers of all income levels—as well as ministry leaders, pastors and teachers and professional advisors—to experience the joy of giving and embrace a lifestyle of generosity, according to God’s word and Christ’s example. It was launched in 2000 by the Maclellan Foundation, a 50-year leader in Christian grant-making, to stir a renewed, Spirit-led commitment to generosity among Christians—reminding rich and poor alike that “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35b). Because Generous Giving is privately funded, we do not solicit donations for ourselves or for others.

  • Our mission is to motivate followers of Jesus Christ toward greater biblical generosity.
  • Our vision is the hearts and minds of God’s people transformed for revolutionary giving.
  • Our core message proclaims the joy of giving out of gratitude for salvation in Christ, rather than out of obligation or guilt. We are guided by these key verses as reflected in our statement of faith and position statements. Our teachings are summarized in Randy Alcorn’s book The Treasure Principle and the audio CD Generous Giving 101.

Stewardship and Philanthropy Statistics

As opportunities for Church growth grow globally, U.S. Christians continue to accumulate record wealth while giving away proportionately less than we did during the Great Depression. The facts and figures in this section offer a snapshot of wealth accumulation, Church growth, stewardship education and giving trends. After reviewing the current state of Christian giving, be sure to read what the Scriptures say about how it could be.
